Bollywood Sperm is a dark comedy set in India. The story examines the relationship between power and beauty. The plot is audacious A company called Star Seed Inc. teams up with a handsome and famous film star, Farrukh Khan, to sell his sperm for artificial insemination. Insemination is offered by Star Seed not as a treatment for infertility, but as a means to produce children bearing physical resemblance to the film star. Due to an apparent mess up, a client ends up giving birth to an extremely unattractive child. The family that has purchased Star Seed's procedure in this case is an incongruous couple; a gorgeous woman called Priya and her very plain husband Sumit Kumar. The couple files a lawsuit against the company and the film star alleging breach of contract. The ensuing legal battle and its denouement form the substance of the story.
At one level, the book is a simple narration of this story. At another, subliminal level, the book explores several themes on how society and individuals relate to beauty, such as
- The loss of reason in the presence of an attractive individual
- How physical attractiveness is leveraged as a tool to acquire power and wealth on an industrial scale
- Societal and parental attitudes towards unattractive children
- The alienation of unattractive people in general
All of this is packed tightly into 56 pages. Bollywood Sperm is designed to entertain the casual reader, and to explode in the hands of the discerning one.

Being able to purchase and read a novella such as this on my Kindle is a prime example of one of the positive aspects of owning a Kindle. An author has this vehicle to showcase their talent and build up a base of readers who want to have more of their work available. Readers can quickly and inexpensively sample enough of a writer's style to know whether or not to look for more creative output from them.BOLLYWOOD SPERM was a complete unknown for me because I was not familiar with any works of Nikhil Tripathi, a clean slate for me to explore. This novella can be viewed on so many levels that it was constantly surprising me. There is the cultural aspect of a plot set in India. With such a short story there was not time for many details regarding this fascinating world, but the highlights were definitely interesting. On the level of how we as people view what is beautiful and what is not, I found myself shocked, surprised, and yet feeling that Tripathi had accurately described modern culture's preoccupation with outward beauty. In this case it made absolutely no difference that someone was totally a self-centered, selfish person or that a mother would casually reject her child because he didn't fit her definition of attractiveness. On the extreme opposite side of that concept was the father who loved his child unconditionally. What seems to be the current craze of being willing to perpetuate any scam or con possible on unsuspecting people was represented by selling the sperm of a man held in high regard for his outward appearance through a television advertisement on a shopping network. Something I couldn't help but shake my head over until I realized how close we come now to having that very thing happening. Fans will go to any length to look like a famous personality they admire and all too often that admiration is based on nothing more than physical appearance. This novella is truly a mirror of our times.
I can't tell you how many times I thought to myself: Yes, I've seen people act like that. And I have seen them and been amazed at how self-absorbed they are. This short reading experience shows all sides of what is happening in these situations and how everyone is hurt by callous individuals. I thought it was fascinating!

Bollywood Sperm edition by Nikhil Tripathi Sonal Gupta Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Every culture has their idiosyncracies about dream parenthoods - some cultures daydream of shrieking on live television while their progeny do the same on American Idol, others see it as Bollywood.
This book asks an interesting question - how far back in parenthood do those ambitions extend to ? Even before conception for example. Though the book pushes its premise right to the edge of reason, I have to point out to my own self - people already go through risky and painful botox and plastic surgery operations for a chance at vanity... how hard it can be to push it further back.
I have seen that every person has a different take on the book - my personal view is the book asks whether it is worth it. And the answer comes off as both yes and no.
Contrary to what the name suggests, the story is not about Bollywood. It's a hilarious yet insightful look at today's India, the flavor is like that of Slumdog Millionaire, only bit size and packed with lots of wit. The story centers around Farrukh Khan, (any resemblance to Shah Rukh Khan is purely coincidental and unintentional). Starting with a courtroom drama around a sperm donation gone bad, the story flash forwards to the twist which is quite nicely done. Look forward to a full novel next time. Two thumbs up!
When asked if I would read this story for a possible review, I was intrigued enough so I dove in. It is a pretty short and easy to get through. It begins in a courtroom in the middle of an odd Bollywood debate about the origin of sperm used to inseminate a woman. This woman (like many others) had purchased the sperm of a famous Bollywood star to ensure that her child would be attractive. When the baby was born unattractive in her eyes, she sued the company that sold her the star's sperm. Her husband loved the baby and had no problem with the situation but was concerned that his wife was in distress.
So the trial continues and delves into the hundreds of women/couples who have paid this company to perform insemination using this 'special sperm'. Deceptions are unveiled, and the sarcasm and humor is thick throughout the trial dialogue.
Then the story changes to after the trial and the whole feel of changes, it becomes a more serious, sad tale and doesn't have the same sarcastic tone. It almost seemed like a different story.
The bottom line, this was a fun story, not my cup of tea but I'm not up on all the ins and outs of Bollywood so I'm sure that much of it was lost on my American way of thinking.
